An Unplanned Blessing

Like many of you, my summer did not go according to plan. Instead of my normal busy schedule, life took on a bit of a slower pace. Though it was discouraging to see events canceled and restrictions put in place, God was freeing up my schedule for a greater blessing.

A month or so after I had returned home from college, I ran into one of my childhood friends at the grocery store. Though we had been friends for over a decade, we had not kept in great touch. After seeing each other, we made plans to catch up over coffee.

When we eventually got together, I was amazed to hear that my friend’s life had radically changed. She told me that in January she had accepted Christ into her heart through her involvement in a campus ministry. When COVID forced all college students to return home, she was distanced from her Christian mentors, but by God’s great timing and provision, He allowed us to cross paths in the store. I could not have been more in awe of God! This was the same friend who, for years, I had invited to church events and shared my faith with. To see her now as a new believer in Christ was such a testimony to God’s faithful pursuit of the one, as described in Matthew 18:12-14.

“What do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.”

She was eager to learn more about God and the Bible, and I gladly came alongside her. Over the next few months, we met together as friends, sharing our life updates, and as sisters in Christ, growing in our love for God. As a spiritual mentor to my friend, I was beyond inspired and encouraged by her. Her excitement spurred me on in my faith and reignited my passion for the gospel message. During our time together, I saw God work miracles in each of our lives, deepen our friendship, and shower us with His tender mercies.

Through this relationship, I learned that my planted seeds matter. There is no age requirement to be a mentor; God honors our obedience and will use us in whatever circumstances we may find ourselves in. It is so easy to feel discouraged when our plans don’t work out or when we have yet to see our planted seeds take root. However, I challenge you to reflect on God’s hidden blessings. How have you seen Him at work in your relationships? How has God used this COVID season to bless you and others? How has God challenged you or inspired you?

God does not waste a thing. He is working in your mentoring relationships as well as in your friendships with unbelievers. So dear mentors, let your lives be a testimony to God’s unfailing love, giving Him all the glory for how He has blessed you so that you can, in turn, be a blessing to others.
