Pandemic Perks

Greetings Mentors! How’s it going out there in mentorland? I’d love to meet you face to face, but that’s not as feasible in the current situation. Travel is restricted, most coffee shops are still closed, and talking through masks has proved challenging.

Due to COVID-19, we’ve encountered many restrictions: we can’t meet, we can’t hug, and we have a long list of things we can’t do that we’d like to. But you know what? MENTORING is NOT on the list!!! Praise God!! In fact, this pandemic has opened doors of opportunity for mentoring that are rather unprecedented.

Coffeeshops may have closed their seating, but mentoring can take place anywhere,, and we can make it happen with access to a variety of tools. God is not inhibited by a pandemic!

These are some of the “pandemic perks” I’ve noticed….

  1. You can virtually mentor someone from a different town, state or country! Just make sure you pay attention to the time zone changes. :)

  2. You can meet longer because you don’t have to factor in travel time.

  3. Through technology, you can stay in touch more regularly between meetings. Your mentees can teach you about which apps and tech tools work best for them. Voxer & Marco Polo are favorites of my mentees!

  4. You can do life together with your mentee in a real and authentic way by entering her world through video chat. You can see her house, meet her husband and children, and witness her everyday life!

  5. Scheduling is simpler when you meet from your homes. It reduces decision making!

  6. Prayer time with your mentee is more enriching and “doable” when you are not in a public setting. Ever try to pray in a noisy and active Panera? ‘Nuff said!

If you need an idea for how to fill the time in your virtual meetings, may I suggest Together: A Guide for Mentors and Mentees? It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to complete a session over video chat. It’s easily modified for whatever window of time you have. It’s a great way to get to know each other and to have a guided time of prayer each session. You have a place to write down your prayer requests for your mentee and to jot notes about what you talked about and what’s on her heart.

So mentors, let’s take advantage of some of these “pandemic perks” and keep pouring into others and pointing them to Jesus. Let’s courageously walk through the open doors of new opportunity that God has given us through technology. He is on the move!!
