Walk and Point and Pray

Recently, I have been pondering the words "walk and point and pray" as they apply to mentoring and my own personal walk with the Lord.

As I walk with Him, He points to places in me that I need to release to Him. The question is: Am I willing to hear, willing to look, willing to agree with Him? As He points things out, do I trust Him?

Walking closely with Him, I know He will equip me for all He has for me to do. He provides the process of change. After all, Jesus Christ is the one who is always full to overflowing when it comes to supply.

As a mentor, I want to follow Jesus' example of being a trustworthy source of accountability and encouragement and prayer. When it's me and my mentee, I have the opportunity to point to an area in her life and point to God’s Word and say, “Let’s pray about this.” I also have the joy of pointing out beautiful growth in her life and celebrating that it is God who is doing the work in her life!

That’s what I love about mentoring. In this picture of discipleship, the Lord is working on both of us at the same time as we walk and point and pray. The Lord is not done with either of us. His grace over us gets to be shared with one another. What a picture of God’s mercy, grace, long suffering, and love for us all.

Recently, I saw one of my earliest influencers at a women’s conference. Sherri was my youth leader when I was a teenager. She was one who pointed me to God’s truth, she walked with me, she prayed for me.  She was my mentor. Reuniting with her felt like what heaven may be like. Together we rejoiced and celebrated because in many ways we're still walking together, pointing others to Him, and praying for Him to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine.
