Why Moms Like Me Need Mentors

As a mom of three "littles," drained is a word I often find myself using to describe my state of being – physically, mentally, emotionally, even spiritually drained. Renewal is a word I long for and wish I had more often. In reality, it’s not even just a desire, it’s a need. In order to be a better mom, I need to be renewed. I need alone time. I need quiet time. I need Jesus to wash over me. I need someone to come in and say, “Honey, you need a break. Let me care for your little ones while you do what you need to do.” Oh how sweet those words are to the soul!

Having no family nearby and a husband who is often gone has been incredibly isolating. I have found myself stuck in many low places the past few years, places I never imagined visiting. Intentionally seeking out others has been a saving grace for my life. Friends are amazing and God has used them as a huge source of love, support, and encouragement for me. But, the majority of my dear friends are in the same boat as I am, and most of them do not have the time or energy to step in and provide a break for me. They need one as well!

I believe this is where women who are single or more seasoned can be life-givers. They can step in and be the hands and feet of Jesus in the most practical of ways. They can play with my kids while I _______ (insert literally anything here: nap, shower, read, write, run an errand, take a walk, get a pedicure…). They can bring a meal, watch my children so Hubby and I can have a date night, they can be a listening ear, they can pray over me. Truly, the possibilities are endless. And the rewards are eternal. As a young mom in a crazy season of life, I can’t express enough how vital mentors are to us! If you haven’t already, I encourage you to ask God who He wants you to see – and then take the next step.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18
